How to Properly Maintain Your Hardwood Floors

We all love hardwood flooring. They are some of the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing floors available and can be surprisingly affordable when compared to tiled floors or other high quality ‘hard’ surface designs.

However, if you have invested in a hardwood floor it is imperative that you know how to maintain it properly to ensure that it will stay looking beautiful and feeling great for years to come.

  1. Put Pads on All Furniture

Nothing is worse than a scuffed up floor with scratches from all the times you moved furniture around. Prevent this problem by putting felt pads on the legs of all of your tables and chairs, it will prevent scratches and make moving your furniture that much easier.

  1. Regularly Clean and Mop

On a weekly/bi weekly basis, you should vaccum and mop your hardwood to ensure it remains looking pristine and clean.

Remove whatever furniture you can, run the vaccum over the floor, and then mop with the grain ensuring that you dry the floor sufficiently so that water does not get trapped in the cracks and buckle the hard wood.

  1. Have Someone Professionally Wax/Seal the Wood

On a yearly basis (or six months depending on your budget) you should have someone professional come in and seal or wax the wood to prevent dirt and other grime from getting trapped in the wood and keep a pristine, fresh shine going on the floors you invested so much in.

If you are confident in your abilities, you can even do this yourself to save a little money, however, it is recommended that you have it professionally done at least once every two years.
